The Cardiothoracic Surgery Integrated 6-Year Residency program is designed to provide aspiring medical school graduates with the education and skills training necessary to become competent professional surgeons. The University offers a wide variety of complex cases. This prepares future cardiac surgeons for a successful career.

During the first three years of the program, residents experience rotations in General Surgery, Endoscopy, Trauma, Cardiology, and Cardiac Imaging, among other related fields. These specific rotations prepare residents for the last three years which provides in-depth hands-on operative experiences in adult cardiac and thoracic surgery, and transplantation.

The final three years, residents will gradually move toward competence and surgical autonomy in Cardiac and Thoracic surgical procedures. By the conclusion of their sixth year, they will be well prepared for board certification and enabled to meet the specific needs of their patients.

Along with learning, the city of Lexington offers many social activities and events. The city offers vineyards, breweries, restaurants, hiking and biking pathways, parks, and multiple city-wide celebrations.
